What Is Healthcare Navigation — and Does Your Family Need It?

Published by Christine Koraiban, RN, BSN, LC | Every Baby Feeds

You thought the hard part was getting through labor and delivery.

Then you came home with your baby, and the appointments started. The referrals. The specialists with long wait lists. The follow-up you're not sure how to prepare for. The insurance calls that go nowhere. The pediatrician visit where the doctor said something important and you nodded along — and then spent the next three hours Googling what it actually meant.

Nobody hands you a roadmap for this part of parenting. And for families navigating complex medical needs, early diagnoses, or simply the overwhelming volume of information that comes with a new baby, the system can feel impossible to keep up with.

That's what healthcare navigation is for.

What is healthcare navigation?

Healthcare navigation is support that helps families understand, organize, and move through the healthcare system with more confidence and less chaos.

It's not about conflict or confrontation. It's not about challenging your doctors or fighting the system. It's about making sure you have the information, preparation, and clarity you need to show up as a confident, informed member of your child's care team — because that's exactly what you are.

A healthcare navigator helps bridge the gap between the care your family receives and your ability to fully understand and participate in it. That gap is more common than most people realize, and it has nothing to do with how smart or capable you are. The healthcare system is genuinely complex — even for people who work in it.

What does healthcare navigation actually look like?

Healthcare navigation looks different for every family, because every family's situation is different. But in general, it might include:

Appointment preparation — Helping you identify the right questions to ask before a specialist visit, so you walk in feeling ready and walk out with the information you actually need.

Care coordination — Helping you make sense of multiple providers, referrals, or overlapping recommendations, and supporting you in understanding how all the pieces fit together.

Records and communication — Helping you organize your child's medical history, understand what information to bring to appointments, and follow up on next steps.

Clarity and understanding — Sitting with you after a diagnosis or a difficult conversation to help you process what was said, understand your options, and figure out what comes next.

The goal is always the same: to help you feel less alone in the process and more prepared to care for your child.

Who benefits from healthcare navigation support?

Healthcare navigation isn't only for families managing complex medical diagnoses — though it is especially valuable in those situations. It can be helpful for any family who feels like they're struggling to keep up with their child's care.

You might benefit from healthcare navigation support if:

  • Your baby or child has received a new diagnosis and you're not sure where to start

  • You've been given referrals and aren't sure how to prioritize or coordinate them

  • You leave appointments feeling like you didn't ask the right questions — or didn't understand the answers

  • You feel like things are falling through the cracks between providers

  • You're preparing for an important appointment and want to feel more confident going in

  • You simply feel overwhelmed by the volume of information and don't know who to ask

You don't have to be in crisis to ask for support. In fact, the earlier you have guidance, the less likely things are to become a crisis.

Why I offer this service

My path to healthcare navigation support was personal before it was professional.

I'm a registered nurse with over 15 years of clinical experience, including time spent as an oncology nurse navigator — a role where I helped patients move from diagnosis through treatment, coordinating their care, preparing them for appointments, and helping them understand what was happening every step of the way.

Then I became a parent. My first son was born with Down syndrome, and suddenly I found myself on the other side of the system. Despite my clinical background, I felt what so many families feel: overwhelmed, uncertain, and unsure of who to call or what to ask.

That experience changed the way I think about care. It showed me how much it matters to have someone in your corner — not to fight your battles, but to help you show up prepared and supported.

That's what I bring to every family I work with.

How healthcare navigation support works at Every Baby Feeds

I offer healthcare navigation support for families during pregnancy and early childhood.

We start with a New Patient Navigation Evaluation — a 75-minute visit where we review your child's care, discuss your concerns and goals, and create a clear plan for moving forward. From there, families who need ongoing support can access hourly packages designed to be used flexibly around their family's needs.

If you're already working with me for lactation support, I also offer a Healthcare Navigation Add-On that allows us to briefly address care planning or advocacy preparation as part of your lactation visit.

I collaborate with your healthcare providers, not around them. The goal is always to support communication, not complicate it.

You don't have to navigate this alone

Early parenthood is hard. Navigating the healthcare system is hard. Doing both at the same time — while sleep-deprived, emotionally stretched, and trying to do everything right for your baby — can feel completely overwhelming.

If you're not sure whether healthcare navigation support is the right fit for your family, I'm always happy to talk it through. You can reach out through the contact page or book a free 15-minute consultation to ask questions and see if it feels like the right fit.

Because you shouldn't have to figure all of this out alone.
