Breastmilk & Formula Storage: The Rule of 5s
As a parent, figuring out how to safely store breastmilk or formula can feel overwhelming. You want to make sure your baby’s milk is both nutritious and safe. That’s why I love using “the rule of 5s” – a simple way to remember storage times for breastmilk – plus a few key tips for formula.
The Rule of 5s for Breastmilk
Breastmilk is packed with living cells and immune-boosting properties, but it needs to be stored correctly to keep those benefits intact. The rule of 5s makes it easy:
5 hours – Freshly pumped milk can stay at room temperature (up to 77°F) for about 4–5 hours.
5 days – Store breastmilk in the refrigerator (at or below 40°F) for up to 4–5 days. Keep it in the back, where the temperature is most stable.
5 months – Breastmilk can stay in the freezer (0°F or colder) for about 5–6 months for best quality (up to 12 months is considered safe if needed).
Thawing & Warming Breastmilk
When it’s time to use frozen milk:
Thaw in the fridge overnight when possible.
For faster use, place the sealed container under warm running water or in a bowl of warm water.
Do not microwave breastmilk – it can create hot spots and destroy valuable nutrients.
Once thawed, use within 24 hours and never refreeze.
Safe Handling of Formula
Whether you use powdered, liquid concentrate, or ready-to-feed formula, safety matters:
Wash your hands before preparing bottles.
For powdered formula, use boiled and cooled water (about 70°C/158°F) if your baby is under 3 months, premature, or has a weakened immune system.
Prepare only what your baby will drink in one sitting. Formula left in the bottle after a feeding should be discarded.
Room temperature: Use prepared formula within 2 hours (or 1 hour after the feeding has started).
Refrigerator: Prepared formula can be stored for up to 24 hours.
Important: If you mix breastmilk and formula in the same bottle, follow formula storage guidelines for safety — use it within 2 hours (or 1 hour after feeding starts) and discard any leftovers.
Final Thoughts
Safe milk storage doesn’t have to be complicated. With the rule of 5s, you’ll always know how long your breastmilk is good for, and with a few extra precautions, your baby’s formula will be safe too.
